Things to know about Bari, Puglia

Where is Bari?

Bari is in southern Italy, on the east side of the boot-shaped peninsula. Its position is strategic, and today, like before, it occupies a favourite location within the Adriatic Sea. It resembles the Greece landscape, and in fact, was once upon a time the way for Greeks to land in Italy. Today, it’s away from the main popular cities in Italy, which are mostly on the west side of the country. However, it is easy to reach Bari from Rome within 3 hours by either car or rail.

With its picturesque waterfront, charming old town, and rich history, Bari offers a delightful blend of Mediterranean beauty and authentic Italian charm.

Is Bari safe for tourists?

Yes. Bari is safe for tourists. However, it has not always been like that, and the city and local authorities are improving greatly. Bari is today a popular tourist city, and you can walk around without trouble. That said, have you considered getting travel insurance? We suggest HeyMondo for short trips and Safety Wings for longer stays. These two are our favourite travel insurance, and we always travel with them for peace of mind.

For the safest stay in Bari, we suggest you follow the local guidelines and book your accommodations in: San Pasquale, Picone, Poggiofranco, or Murat. So, consider that even if prices might be appealing, avoid these neighbourhoods: Libertà, Japigia, San Paolo, and San Pio.

Soon on vacation? Don’t Go Without Travel Insurance.

We always recommend SafetyWing if you are embracing a long trip. We use them since 2018 and never get disappointed. Used to travel through South East Asia, Caribbean but also for short trips in Europe and around.
If you are a Digital Nomad looking to have peace of mind while staying abroad, go for SafetyWing like we do. They offers a fantastic plan, that you can renew monthly, without hidden fees and reliable assistance.

What is the best time to visit Bari?

One of the best things about Bari is that there are no seasonal restrictions. Well, Puglia in summer is incredible, but visiting out of season might save you money. Consider that Puglia is an off the beaten path destination, so it’s possible even in the shoulder season. In fact, visiting Puglia in winter will let you explore more of the countryside and use Bari as a base.

For a dive into the local traditions, have you considered exploring Bari at Christmas? It could be a great addition to an authentic experience in Italy.

Weatherwise, Bari benefits from the typical Mediterranean climate, with high temperatures and beautiful sunny days until October, if not November. It might be the perfect destination for a late summer adventure in Italy.

Is Bari worth visiting?

Before diving into every single reason why you should book your flight to Bari, let us spend a few words more about an underrated romantic city in Italy.

After covid, Bari, and generally, Puglia gained worldwide recognition as one of the latest destinations in Italy to attract mass. The destination before was only visited by locals, and even though it still has some problems in terms of infrastructure, it is improving and attracting investments.

Bari is passing by being one of the most populated cities in Italy, and well known only to be the harbour linking Italy with Albania and Greece, to the ultimate destination for summer in Italy.

If you are looking for things to do in Bari and can’t wait to finish this post, go and check our suggestions.

Bari’s Rich History and Cultural Heritage

Bari has an architectural beauty that other famous Italian cities have overshadowed for so long. Luckily, it’s slowly making its way to the list of most popular attractions in Italy.

While exploring Bari, you can’t miss admiring the architectural beauty of Bari, from the grandeur of the Swabian Castle to the elegant facades of the Basilica di San Nicola and the Teatro Petruzzelli. The city’s architectural gems showcase a blend of styles and epochs.

I think that in some ways the fact that it is always sunny, more than 250 days per year, makes everything more beautiful.

Breathtaking Coastal Beauty

Bari is on the stunning Adriatic coastline, offering mesmerising views of crystal-clear waters, pristine beaches, and rugged cliffs. It’s a paradise for beach lovers and nature enthusiasts. In some ways, Bari reminds us of another Adriatic city on the opposite side. If you have been to Croatia, Bari resembles Split, if not for the architecture, which is completely different from the long promenade.

If you are exploring Bari in summer, you must consider enjoying Pomodoro Beach. Until a few years ago, only locals were enjoying the atmosphere, but as of 2023, it is a buzzing beach on the Adriatic Sea filled with curious tourists. However, you must know that even though the sea is clear and the beach is free, there are very few services at this beach. Check out the best beaches in Puglia.

Mouthwatering Cuisine

We wrote an entire guide about Puglian cuisine, and the reason is only one; It is fantastic. With Puglia taking the scene of Italian summer tourism, the cuisine is finally getting the position it deserves. I think we gained a couple of Kilos while exploring Puglia for 10 days. Bari resumed the traditional dishes coming from every single village. You can find the traditional Orecchiette pasta, fresh seafood, and savoury focaccia base.

If you have just a few days in Bari, you can hit a secure spot and get it all. The Mercato Coperto offers samples of regional delicatessen all in one place. Also, remember that you must sip a glass of local wine with every meal. Primitivo and Negroamaro are our favourites; if you try them, let us know in the comments.

Lively Street Markets

We have mentioned the mercato coperto, so it’s time to introduce you to Bari’s lively markets, offering the best of local traditions and street food. Overall, markets are always a good reason to visit a place that is more of a hidden gem.

While in Bari, immerse yourself in the bustling atmosphere of Bari’s street markets, such as Mercato del Pesce and Mercato delle Erbe. Discover an array of fresh produce, local products, and traditional crafts while engaging with friendly local vendors.

Fantastic for nightlife

Bari is fantastic because it is lively all day. During the night, the atmosphere changes, with locals taking advantage of the chilled temperature. Most of the people congregate on the promenade. If you are looking for somewhere to eat, stop at the food trucks offering incredible paninis and sandwiches.

Our favourite was “Nterre a Lanza”. Take your panini filled with meat, cheese, and mozzarella, grab a cold beer and join locals watching the sea. Alternatively, you can walk in the old town and get to “Largo Albicocca” (The Lovers’ Square of Bari). This is a very hidden gem and less popular among tourists. Every night there is something going on here, with music, food and dance. The atmosphere is unique, and it is also one of the most instagrammable places in Bari.

An ideal destination for families

Even though Bari is a big city, in Italy’s top 10 most populated cities, it’s a family-friendly destination in the country. We saw many people travelling through the region and enjoying the breeze of Southern Italy.

Usually, the beaches are smaller, perfect for keeping an eye on the little ones. If you want to move by public transport, it is easy, going around on buses. However, the centre of Bari and the shopping area are traffic free.

Exploring Bari’s Hidden Gems

We discovered the womb of Bari. Deep into the soul, exploring hidden corners that left us in awe.

Bari is raw, and in its basic nature you will find the beauty. There are places of Bari you might have never heard of; like: the Murat District with it’s french buildings and stylish architecture, or walking in Bari Vecchia the Largo Albicocca, or as called by locals Piazza degli innamorati (Lover’s square).

In my recent trip to Bari, I went around the historical centre by myself. Late at night. It was an awesome experience, away from the buzz of the daily tourists routes. More locals, more intimate.

Gateway to Puglia

We started our trip in Bari, and from there, it was easy to explore the countryside and Puglia attractions. Actually, check out our 11 reasons why you should visit Puglia.

Thanks to one of the most active airports in the country, Bari serves as an ideal base for exploring the enchanting region of Puglia. From here, you can easily access other captivating destinations such as Alberobello, Ostuni and Martina Franca in Valle d’Itria.

Also, you can move to the coast side, exploring the fantastic Polignano a Mare, or less known Monopoli. Just 1 hour away from Bari, there is Matera, well known as a Unesco world heritage site.

Warm Hospitality

Pugliese people are incredible. Well, we didn’t have anything particular in Bari, but while arriving in Martina Franca, the owner of our B&B Trullo, was so sweet to come to the train station to pick us up.

He was on his father’s duty to pick up the daughter but found the time to help us without carrying heavy luggage. Well, let’s go back to Bari’s warm hospitality. Locals take pride in their city and are eager to share their traditions, customs, and culinary delights with visitors.

Bari offers an authentic and hospitable Italian experience. One of the most picturesque areas of Bali to experience is definitely Bari Vecchia. Seat at an outdoor bar and start to chat with people sipping a cold beer. Embrace the traditional Italian lifestyle. The South is well known for that.

Vibrant Festivals

Southern Italy is famous for the folklore and local traditions handed down by generations. Bari is none less about that. Heading to the popular Puglian city, you must experience the city during its best time. Bari literally comes alive more and more during festivals and topical events.

One of the festivals you must attend is the picturesque Fest di San Nicola. The celebration of the Saint Patron of the city it’s a fabulous religious event that calls back people from everywhere in Italy.

One of the main reasons to visit Bari is to immerse yourself in the vibrant celebrations made of traditional music and a colourful parade. If you are interested in that, you might like the tours here.
